Eastern freshman wins javelin competition in her Big Sky debut while teammate Kersee Lind places 16th in the decathlon
Freshman Michelle Coombs finished 12th in the heptathlon and sophomore Kersee Lind was 16th in the decathlon as the Eastern Washington University track and field teams concluded the combined events portion of the 2009 Big Sky Conference Outdoor Championships Thursday (May 14) in Missoula, Mont. The regular portion of the meet takes place on Friday (May 15) and Saturday (May 16).
Coombs had a total of 3,835 points in the seven-event competition She won the javelin throw with a mark of 147-3 -- just one foot less than her career-best throw of 148-3 set earlier this season. Coombs will compete Friday (May 14) in the javelin beginning at 3 p.m.
Her best point total of 4,438 came earlier this season in her first-ever collegiate heptathlon. That total ranks fourth in school history.
Lind finished with 3,986 points after dropping out after the discus throw. He finished eighth in the discus (111-5), seventh in the 110-meter hurdles (16.01) and fourth in the high jump (6-2 3/4).
The regular portion of the meet begins Friday with the men's hammer beginning at noon and the women's steeplechase starting at 3 p.m.
