October 2009
Dear Eagle Family,
The leaves are turning colors while the mornings and evenings have a crisp feel to them . . . ah, it must be October. With one complete month in the books, we have started fast at Eastern. Amazingly, the Big Sky Conference has already honored 10 different fall student-athletes for their athletic performance this year while two of our student-athletes have been recognized twice. Two of them have been honored nationally . . . all of this occurring in just over 30 days of competition.
Congratulations to the following S/A’s who have been honored thus far in ’09-10:
Brittany Sparks – Soccer (twice)
Hayley Hills - Volleyball
Kevin Hatch – Football
Alex Smyth – Cross Country
Aaron Boyce – Football
Taiwan Jones – Football (national)
Kyle King – Cross Country
Ashley Hamilton - Volleyball
J.C. Sherritt – Football (twice and national honor)
Cameron Zuber – Football
As we head into the heart of our Big Sky schedules in both volleyball and football, both teams have put themselves in good position to be a major factor as the year moves on. As of this writing, both teams have begun undefeated (volleyball 4-0 and football 2-0) making this month a very exciting one for Eagle fans. Soccer, meanwhile, begins and ends their Big Sky play in October as the entire regular season schedule is played during this month. As mentioned above, junior Brittany Sparks has really come into her own offensively and as of September 28 was leading the Big Sky in both goals (8) and points (16) while teammate Whitney Brannan was second in each category with 11 points and 4 goals. And finally, our cross country teams will participate in their conference meet on Halloween in Greeley, Colorado.
There are several events to look forward to in October and my hope is that you will take them all in. On October 10 prior to our football game with Weber State, we will be honoring this year’s Hall of Fame Induction Class. This annual recognition ceremony is a particular favorite of mine as it affords us the opportunity to link our heritage with what is occurring today at Eastern. I make it a point whenever possible to point out that without the hard work and successes of everyone that came before us, we would not have the opportunities that we have today.
Homecoming is also this month on October 24 . . . we look forward to a tremendously festive atmosphere this year as our friends from Alumni have a number of great activities planned for this year’s Homecoming festivities.
Finally, the Showdown on the Sound – our first venture into Seattle to play football (versus Portland State) occurs on October 31. I urge all Eagles to make a great showing at this event.
Have a great October and “see” you in November - Go Eagles!
Bill
