September 2009

Dear Eagle Family,

We have officially kicked off the new academic sports year as our soccer and volleyball teams participated in their first contests over the weekend. Our soccer team registered an impressive 4-1 win over McNeese State in Cheney and then followed that up with a tough 2-0 loss at Seattle. Our spikers, meanwhile, split matches with Missouri State and San Francisco in Eugene while losing to nationally-ranked Oregon.

Both teams continue their non-conference schedule this week. Our soccer team hosts a pair of matches – Texas-El Paso on Sept. 3 at 4:00 p.m. and Gonzaga on Sunday, September 6 at 1:00 p.m. The Volleyball team will be in Tucson to play in Arizona’s tournament and will play the host Wildcats as well as Nevada and Houston (please see links for additional information).

In addition to soccer and volleyball, our nationally-ranked football team will open its 2009 year with a home game this Saturday, September 5th at Woodward Field – kickoff is slated for Noon. Please note that start time as it has changed from the original time due to live television coverage by our local broadcast partner, KHQ. In addition to this game, we are tremendously excited that all four games in Cheney will be televised either by KHQ or another Big Sky TV partner (please see link for additional information). The football team will also kick-off its Big Sky season in September with a home game versus Northern Colorado on the 19th. As I mentioned to you in my August letter, a small group flew to Indianapolis to meet with the NCAA Appeals Committee regarding our 2009 football postseason ban. The hearing took place on August 17th and as I write today we are still awaiting word on the result.

And finally -- congratulations to a pair of juniors; Brittany Sparks, who was named Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week for her two goals against McNeese State on Saturday (please see link for additional information).
