Matt Martin from the football team and Amy Kolin from the cross country squad honored for their achievements
Seniors Matt Martin from the football team and Amy Kolin from the cross country squad have been selected by the Eastern Washington University athletic department as Scholar-Athlete Award recipients for the month of October.
Martin, a 2006 graduate of La Crosse-Washtucna (Wash.) High School. is a double major in general business and management with a 3.76 grade point average. Kolin is from Ypsilanti, Mich., and transferred to Eastern from Grand Valley State. She is currently in graduate school at Eastern in physical therapy, and had a 3.88 GPA as an undergraduate.

Martin will be selected to the Big Sky Conference All-Academic team for the fourth time in 2010 as Eastern was unbeaten in October with a 5-0 record. He has caught just seven passes for 54 yards this season, but also blocks for an Eastern team ranked 17th in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision in total offense (408.2 yards per game), 21st in passing offense (246.7) and 25th in scoring offense (30.1 points per game).
He has started 11 games this season and 14 in his 45-game career, having played in every Eastern game the past four seasons. He has caught 33 passes for 287 yards and three touchdowns as an Eagle, and also had seven tackles as a freshman and sophomore on special teams.
After being undefeated in four years in high school while playing eight-man football, the former walk-on has helped Eastern to a 30-15 record in his four seasons in the program. Eastern is 23-8 in Big Sky Conference games in that span, and will be trying to win its first Big Sky Conference title since 2005 when the Eagles host Idaho State on Nov. 20 at Roos Field. Before that game, however, Eastern faces Southern Utah in a non-conference game this Saturday (Nov. 13), also at Roos Field. Both games begin at 1:05 p.m.

Kolin, who will be competing for Eastern this Saturday (Nov. 13) at the NCAA West Regional Cross Country Championships in Eugene, Ore., earned All-Big Sky Conference honors Oct. 30 at the Big Sky Conference Championships hosted by EWU. She placed sixth in the 5,000-meter women’s race, crossing the finish line in 16:06.6 and helping the Eagles secure a seventh-place team finish.
Two weeks earlier, Kolin was the individual champion at the Inland Northwest Cross Country Classic at EWU. She had a time of 18:10.1 on the 5,000-meter course.
In September, she was selected as the Big Sky Conference Athlete of the Week after her impressive debut performance as an Eagle at the Sundodger Invitational in Seattle on Sept. 18. She helped the women’s team finish sixth out of the nine total teams with a 12th-place finish. She was able to beat eight of the 14 runners from Washington, which was ranked third at the time nationally. In addition, the senior beat all of the competitors from regionally-ranked Nevada.
While running for Grand Valley State, Kolin placed 26th at the Division II National Cross Country Championships her junior year, recording a time of 21:39.5 on a 6,000-meter course. She placed 54th (23:07.0) in the event her sophomore year.
On the track, Kolin placed 18th in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA Division II Championships her junior year, recording a time of 17:33.13. Her best time in the event came at the Mt. Sac Relays as she had a time of 16:46.01, a time fast enough that would place her third on EWU’s all-time outdoor best list.
