Aaron Mettler Defends Big Sky Javelin Title; Praast and Luckenbach Also Win Titles
Including women's 4x100 relay victory, Eastern wins four titles at Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships Saturday
Eastern Washington University's Aaron Mettler, Stephen Praast, Nicole Luckenbach and the women's 4x100 relay team all won titles Saturday (May 16) as the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships concluded in Missoula, Mont.
In team scoring, Eastern's men finished fifth with 82 points while the women were eighth with 55. Northern Arizona won the men's team competition with 169, while Sacramento State won for the women with 161.
Luckenbach broke her own school record in the hammer with a career-best throw of 191-11 to better the previous record of 185-7. The junior from Mill Creek Wash. (Snohomish HS '05) now ranks eighth all-time in league history. She qualified earlier this season for the upcoming NCAA West Regionals.
"It feels wonderful -- I am really excited," said Luckenbach after winning the title. "It is the first meet I felt good about how I did."
Mettler had a career-best throw in the javelin with a mark of 219-8 after entering the competition ranked fifth in conference. The sophomore from Walla Walla, Wash. (Walla Walla HS '07), successfully defended his title with a mark that now ranks fourth in school history.
"It feels pretty good," said Mettler, who will be gunning for a four-peat in 2010 and 2011. "It hasn't really sunk in yet, but I feel like I deserve it."
Praast won the high jump with an effort of 6-8 3/4, improving his best effort of the season by two inches. He is from Ravensdale, Wash., and graduated from Tahoma High School in 2006. Helping Eastern to a 1-5-8 finish in that event was Kersee Lind with a fifth-place finish and Big Sky indoor champion Adam Stewart in eighth as both cleared 6-4 3/4.
Eastern's Shannon Long, Shene Davis, Shannon Long and Krystal Deyo combined to win the women's 4x100-meter relay with a time of 46.27 to rank third in school record. Deyo also finished second in the 100 meters with a time of 11.97. She ranks fourth in school history with a time of 11.90 set earlier this season.
Also on Saturday, Cameron Moore finished second in the triple jump with a mark of 47-5 3/4 to lead a 1-5-6-7 finish by the Eagles.
Sophomore Alex Smyth was the fifth individual Eagle to earn All-Big Sky Conference honors Saturday with a top three finish. He placed third in the 1,500 with a time of 3:51.24.
In the javelin, Cody Irby and John Clevenger qualified for the West Regionals. Irby had a throw of 208-0 to finish fourth and Clevenger had a seventh-place toss of 202-8 as Eastern finished 1-4-7 in that event.
The Eagles will compete next at the NCAA West Regionals May 29-30 in Eugene, Ore. Eastern has nine athletes who have met the standard for that meet. They include Luckenbach (hammer), Amanda Peterson (javelin), Michelle Coombs (javelin), Mettler (javelin), Chelsi Friese (pole vault), Deyo (long jump), Irby (javelin), Clevenger (javelin) and the 4x100 meter team.
