Eagles Compete at Husky Classic

EWU has met the league qualifying standards 46 times and have two weeks left before Big Sky Conference Championships

The Eastern Washington University track and field teams will head to the Dempsey Indoor in Seattle, Wash., to compete Friday and Saturday (Feb.12-13) at the Husky Classic.

On Friday, running events begin at 6:30 p.m. with the women's 5,000 meters followed by the men's 5,000 meters at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, field events begin at 10 a.m. with the men's and women's long jump and running events starting at 9:15 a.m. with the 60-meter hurdles.

Eastern has two weeks left before competing at the Big Sky Conference Championships in Bozeman, Mont., on Feb. 26-27. Eastern has met the league qualifying standards 46 times -- 23 for the men and 23 for the women.

Current Big Sky leaders in their respective events are Bowe Ebding (5,000m/14:59.65), Krystal Deyo (60m/7.58 converted from 55m) and Nicole Luckenbach (weight throw/60-8 1/2). The Eagles are ranked 1-2-3 in the 5,000 meters in the Big Sky with Ebding joined by Simon Sorenson (second/15:10.01) and Cody Barton (third/15:17.46).

In the men's high jump, the Eagles currently have three men ranked in the top seven. Defending Big Sky outdoor champion Stephen Praast is third (6-8 1/4), 2009 indoor winner Adam Stewart is fourth (6-8) and Cody Fishel is seventh (6-6 3/4).

In the women's long jump, Shene Davis (second/19-8 1/4), Brianna Okoro (fifth/18-10) and Deyo (ninth/18-7 3/4) rank in the top nine in the BSC.

Erica Chaney, who finished second in the shot put at the 2008 indoor championships, is currently ranked third with a throw of 46-8 3/4.

The Eagles competed on Feb. 5 at the 35th annual Vandal Indoor and Feb. 6 at the Runner's Soul Open, where Luckenbach missed a school record by an inch in the weight throw. Her mark of 60-8 1/2 ranks her second in school history behind Jaime Martin's throw of 60-9 1/2 set in 2002. Chaney had a personal-best throw of 55-9 1/4 to rank fourth in school history.

In the 200 meters, Brianna Okoro had a personal-best time of 25.09 to rank fourth in school history and Whitney Leavitt had a personal-best time of 25.14 to rank fifth in all-time at EWU.
