Last Chance in Idaho For Eastern Track and Field Teams
Eagles have one last chance to improve marks or qualify for the Big Sky Conference Championships
The Eastern Washington University track and field teams will compete at the Vandal Jamboree in Moscow, Idaho, Friday and Saturday (May 7-8) at the Dan O'Brien Track & Field Complex before heading for the Big Sky Conference Championships in Ogden, Utah, on May 12-15.
On Friday, the men’s hammer and women’s hammer will compete at 1 p.m. On Saturday, field events begin at 10:30 a.m. and running events start at 12:30 p.m.
At the Oregon Relays on April 30-May 1, Erica Chaney had a personal-best shot put of 49-4 1/4 to win the event and now rank second in school history. The school-record throw of 50-11 was set by Nancy Kuiper in 1991. Chaney also had a personal best in the discus of 155-6 to win that event and move her into fourth in school history. The school record of 160-9 was set by Carolee Gutierrez in 2007. Chaney already qualified for the conference championships earlier this season in both events.
Brianna Okoro had a personal-best time in the 200 meters with a mark of 24.44 to finish third. Michelle Coombs had a season-best throw in the javelin of 155-5 to finish second. Coombs ranks third in school history with a career-best throw of 163-1 at last year’s BSC Championships.
Paul Limpf had a time on 14:20.94 in the 5,000 meters to finish fourth and teammate Alex Smyth had a time of 14:34.91. Both qualified for the conference championships. Limpf ranks second in school history with a time of 14:09.32 set in 2008 and Smyth ranks eighth with a time of 14:32.86.
Eastern athletes have already met the qualifying standards 54 times for the Big Sky Conference Championships, which take place May 12-15 in Ogden, Utah. The list includes 31 for the men and 23 for the women.
Eagles who rank in the top three in the conference so far are Nicole Luckenbach (199-8, hammer, first), Brad Wall (47.57, 400m, second), Sarah Frey (1:00.39, 400m hurdles, second), Women’s 4x100m (46.05, Frey, Okoro, Davis & Leavitt, second), Adam Stewart (6-9 1/2, high jump, second), Erica Chaney (49-4 1/4, shot put, second & 155-6, discus, third), Brianna Okoro (24.44, 200m, third), Ben Cogdill (16-6 3/4, pole vault, third), David Howard (54-10 1/4, shot put, third), Aaron Mettler (206-5, javelin, third) and Michelle Coombs (155-5, javelin, third).
To compete at the NCAA Division I West Regionals in Austin, Texas, on May 27-29, student-athletes need to rank in the top 48 in their event and so far 10 EWU athletes are on that list. They are Nicole Luckenbach (8th, hammer, 199-8), Erica Chaney (26th, shot put, 49-4 1/4), Sarah Frey (26th, 400m hurdles, 1:00.39), Michelle Coombs (28th, javelin, 155-5), Kyle King (33rd, 10,000m, 29:34.21), Paul Limpf (36th, 10,000m, 29:44.08), Aaron Mettler (40th, javelin, 206-5), Adam Stewart (42nd, high jump, 6-9 1/2), Ben Cogdill (42nd, pole vault, 16-6 3/4) and David Howard (47th, shot put, 54-10 1/4).
