Outdoor season to highlight javelin and hammer throwers as Eastern competes in Dusty Lane Open for first outdoor contest
Just three weeks after concluding their indoor season, the Eastern Washington University track and field teams will open their outdoor campaign close to home, as they travel to Spokane, Wash., for the Dusty Lane Open Saturday (March 19), at Spokane Falls Community College.
Competition will begin at 9:30 a.m., with the combined 10,000 meters. The women’s hammer will be the first field event at 10 a.m. Following this weekend’s competition, Eastern’s top competitors will travel to Palo Alto, Calif., to compete in the Stanford Invitational next Saturday (March 26).
The Eagles will return 11 athletes who have previously earned All-Big Sky Conference honors by placing in the top three at the league’s indoor or outdoor championship meets. The list includes seven men and four women, including a total of seven Big Sky champions. A handful of athletes will also make debuts this spring.
Two-time BSC champion Aaron Mettler will awake from his indoor-season hibernation to highlight the men’s outdoor squad, looking for his fourth-straight all-conference performance in the javelin. The senior from Walla Walla, Wash., placed second in the javelin at the 2010 outdoor championships and was the champion the previous two years.
On the women’s team, Erica Chaney will come off of a stellar indoor season to look for a solid cap to her college career. The senior from Spokane, Wash., placed first in the weight throw and second in the shot put at the indoor conference championships.
Earlier in the season, Chaney broke the school record in the indoor shot put with a toss of 51-7. She surpassed the 20-year-old record of 50-11, which was set by Nancy Kuiper in 1991. Chaney’s best outdoor mark of 49-4 1/4 is just inches away from the school record, which Kuiper also claims with a mark of 50-11. Chaney has been all-conference six times in her career.
Freshman Olivia Midles will make her first Eastern appearance after redshirting the indoor season. Coming from a family whose bloodlines flow rich in the excellence of the hammer throw, Midles broke records left and right in that event during her career at Capital High School in Olympia, Wash. Her best toss in the hammer is 175-10, at the Centralia Twilight meet.
She shattered the state record of 173-7 previously held by her cousin Gabby Midles, who currently throws for Idaho. Olivia dominated the state meet in the hammer, winning in 2008 and 2010, breaking the meet record in 2010. She placed first at the USATF National Junior Track and Field Championships in 2007 and in 2010. Her personal-best throw would already place her fifth on EWU’s all-time outdoor best list.
The Eagle men capped their indoor season with a fifth-place finish while the women placed eighth at the conference championships Feb. 25-26 in Pocatello, Idaho. The Big Sky Conference head coaches predict that the upcoming outdoor finish will look familiar to the indoor.
The Eastern men were selected fifth and the women were picked eighth in the preseason polls in a vote by nine Big Sky Conference head coaches. Sacramento State, which swept the indoor competition, is the favorite for both the men and women. A year ago, Eastern’s men and women both placed fourth, giving the women a best-ever finish at the championships.
The 2011 Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held May 11-14 at Hornet Stadium in Sacramento, Calif.
