As Stanford Invitational Concludes, Williams Qualifies for BSC Championships

A total of 13 Big Sky Conference qualifying marks have now been attained by EWU athletes

Senior Kurt Williams of the Eastern Washington University track team booked his ticket to Sacramento, Calif., for the outdoor conference championships as he hit a qualifying mark in the triple jump, placing fifth at the Stanford Invitational Saturday (March 26) with a mark of 46 feet.

Freshman Olivia Midles had another conference-qualifying mark in the hammer throw. Her toss of 162-4 placed her eighth in the meet.

Senior Erica Chaney placed second in the discus throw with a mark of 154 feet. In yesterday's competition, Chaney won the elite section of the shot put with a mark of 48-2 1/2 to qualify her for the conference championships.

Friday's competition also featured Brad Wall's debut in the 400 meters. He opened his outdoor season with a Big Sky Conference qualifying time of 47.88 to win the event. The junior from Vancouver, Wash., is the school-record holder in the 400 meters, which he set last outdoor season when he won the event at the BSC championships in Ogden, Utah.

Other athletes who met qualifying marks yesterday were senior Aaron Mettler who qualified in the javelin with a mark of 199-10, and senior Krystal Deyo who qualified in the 100 meters with a time of 12.18.

A total of 13 qualifying standards have now been met by the Eagles.

The Eagles will duel against the Grizzlies of Montana next weekend (April 2) as they travel to Missoula, Mont., for the Al Manuel Invitational.
