Eagle Men Second Out of Five Big Sky Schools in Bozeman

Eastern men finish fourth overall in the men’s competition and seventh in women’s team scoring at MSU Invitational

As somewhat of a preview meet for November’s Big Sky Conference Cross Country Championships, the Eastern Washington University men finished second out of five league schools taking part in the Montana State University Invitational Saturday (Sept. 21) at Bridger Creek Golf Course in Bozeman, Mont.

Champion Montana State with 32 points was the only Big Sky school ahead of the Eagle men, who had four runners in the top 20 individually to finish fourth overall. Utah State was second with 35, followed by Utah Valley with 72 and EWU with 92. Eastern finished ahead of Montana (136), Idaho State (142) and Northern Colorado (220) in the team scoring.

The women placed seventh overall among 12 schools that took part. Eastern finished with 155 points and edged Idaho State by eight points, but three other Big Sky schools finished ahead of EWU. Utah State won the team title with a score of 44.

Eastern’s top finisher for the men was UNC Pembroke transfer Chris Schroll, who finished 10th with a time of 25:58 over the five-mile course. Freshmen Alex Kimsey and Stephen Bottoms were Eastern’s next two finishers, placing 16th and 19th, respectively, with times of 26:10 and 26:12. Kimsey is a graduate of Ferris High School in Spokane, Wash., and Bottoms is a 2013 graduate of Onalaska (Wash.) High School. Sophomore Vince Hamilton, a graduate of Spokane’s North Central High School who last competed for Boise State, was 20th in 26:14.

The top EWU finisher in the women’s three-mile race was Sarah Reiter with a time of 18:08. She is from Renton, Wash., and transferred from MSU. Berenice Penaloza from Yakima, Wash., and Eisenhower High School, was 23rd with a time of 18:16.
