Kirk Earlywine on Brunell: "Matt is really tough and he's really smart, and that's a great combination. We need Matt to understand that he's a good player. He sometimes just defers too much to the other players, and I think he's a much better player than he thinks he is sometimes. The biggest area that Matt must improve upon is his rebounding. Two rebounds in 18 minutes per game simply isn't good enough."
2007-08: Brunell finished 13th in the Big Sky Conference in blocked shots (0.57). He scored in double figures three times, including games against Washington (11 on 11/18/07), Santa Clara (12 on 11/29/07) and Montana State (13 on 1/26/08). He was second on the team with 17 blocked shots.
Big Bend CC: Played the 2006-07 season at Big Bend Community College in Moses Lake, Wash. He helped lead Big Bend to a 21-10 record, including a 9-5 record in the Eastern Region. Although the team finished just third in the region, Big Bend closed the season by placing eighth in the 2007 Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) Championships. He was coached at Big Bend by Mark Poth.
High School: Graduated from Cheney High School in 2006. Besides playing basketball, he earned honorable mention All-State honors as a tight end in football. He lettered his junior and senior seasons in basketball, football and soccer.
