Kirk Earlywine on Brunell: "Matt became what I thought was the best team defender in the Big Sky Conference by the end of the year last season. He might not have been able to take a player out of a game individually, but as a team defender he was spectacular and as good as I've coached. His awareness, his alertness away from the ball and his ability to cover mistakes by his teammates was outstanding. I would like him to be more of a threat offensively and a player the other team has to worry about a little more on the offensive end of the floor. Matt is really tough and he's really smart, and that's a great combination."
2008-09: He led Eastern once in rebounding with six against Montana (1/21/09). He had a career and season-high eight rebounds against both UC Irvine (11/30/08) and Sacramento State (2/5/09). He scored in double figures once, with that coming in EWU's third-to-last game of the season versus Seattle (2/24/09) when he had 12. He was third on the team with 12 blocked shots.
2007-08: Brunell finished 13th in the Big Sky Conference in blocked shots (0.57). He scored in double figures three times, including games against Washington (11 on 11/18/07), Santa Clara (12 on 11/29/07) and Montana State (13 on 1/26/08). He was second on the team with 17 blocked shots.
Big Bend CC: Played the 2006-07 season at Big Bend Community College in Moses Lake, Wash. He helped lead Big Bend to a 21-10 record, including a 9-5 record in the Eastern Region. Although the team finished just third in the region, Big Bend closed the season by placing eighth in the 2007 Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) Championships. He was coached at Big Bend by Mark Poth.
