Football Practices Start Aug. 14
With 90 players expected for practices, the first session in pads is Aug. 17 in preparation for Sept. 5 opener
About 90 players are expected to report on Aug. 12-13 as Eastern Washington University begins preseason practices for the 2009 football season.
After a day of conditioning on Aug. 13, the team will practice together for the first time on Aug. 14 at 2:15 p.m. Eastern will continue its NCAA-mandated five-day acclimatization period before practicing in pads for the first time on Monday, Aug. 17 at 2:15 p.m.
A scrimmage free and open to the public will take place at about 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 22 at Gonzaga Prep High School in Spokane, Wash. Another scrimmage is scheduled to take place on Saturday, Aug. 29 at about 11:30 a.m. at Woodward Field in Cheney, Wash. Depending on field conditions, the scrimmage on the 29th may be moved to the EWU Sports and Recreation Center practice fields.
The Eagles open their season at home against Western Oregon on Sept. 5 at 12:05 p.m. Pacific time (time was changed recently) before playing at California of the Pacific 10 Conference on Sept. 12. Classes at EWU don't begin until Sept. 23.
The Eagles are coming off a 6-5 finish in 2008 that included a 5-3 record in the Big Sky Conference, but EWU ended the season with a three-game winning streak under first-year head coach Beau Baldwin. Eastern returns 38 letter winners from that team, including 17 back on offense and 21 returning on defense. A total of 15 starters are returning, featuring eight on offense and seven on defense.
To return to the FCS Playoffs this year, the Eagles will not only have to win more, but hope they eventually receive good news from the NCAA as well. Eastern appealed a postseason ban levied by the NCAA after a two-year review of activities involving the EWU football team from 2003-07 was released in February.
As part of the appeal process, Eastern athletic director Bill Chaves, EWU President Dr. Rodolfo Arévalo and other administrators will meet with the appeals committee in Indianapolis, Ind., on Aug. 17. No timetable for a decision on the appeal has been provided as of yet by the NCAA.
Whether or not the appeal is denied, Baldwin has said since February that the Eagles are taking the approach that the postseason ban won't be a penalty unless Eastern takes care of business on the field in the 2009 season.
