For Fourth Time in Last Six Games, Mitchell is Big Sky POW
With All-Big Sky awards announced Tuesday, Mitchell ends career with 433 yards of offense versus ISU
As a precursor to what should turn into a number of postseason accolades, Eastern Washington University senior quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell has been selected as Big Sky Conference co-Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts in EWU's season-ending 45-14 victory at Idaho State on Saturday (Nov. 19).
This is the fourth time in the last six Eastern games that Mitchell has earned the league's weekly honor, as he shares it for the second-straight week with Weber State's C.J. Tuckett. The All-Big Sky team will be announced on Tuesday (Nov. 22), and Mitchell is a candidate for the league's Offensive Player of the Year. He is also on the voting list for the Walter Payton Award, given to the top player in FCS.
Mitchell, who leads the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision in passing yards (4,009), total offense (4,004) and touchdown passes (33), accounted for 433 yards of total offense in the victory. He completed 37-of-51 passes for 397 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. With outstanding protection all day from his offensive line, he also scrambled his way to another 36 yards rushing.
The 2008 graduate of Katy (Texas) High School broke the single season school record of 4,003 yards that Erik Meyer had in 2005 when he won the Walter Payton Award given to the top player in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision. Mitchell's mark ranks 17th all-time in the FCS and is fifth in Big Sky history. Mitchell also established a new school record by averaging 364.5 passing yards per game, good for ninth in FCS history and third all-time in the Big Sky.
With a quartet of 400-yard passing performances this season – and four more of at least 300 – Mitchell’s season average of 364.5 ranked ahead of the previous record set in 2005 by Meyer when he averaged 333.6 yards per game. Mitchell’s career average of 288.7 per outing is also a school record and ranks ahead of the 268.4 average of Matt Nichols (2006-09). Mitchell's career average ranks 19th all-time in the FCS and sixth in the Big Sky.
Despite playing just two seasons at Eastern, Mitchell ranks third in school history for career passing yards (7,505) and third in touchdown passes (70), and he is also third in completions (618), fourth in attempts (1008) and third in passing efficiency rating (141.2). He had 10 300-yard performances in his 26-game EWU career, including four of the 19 400-yard performances in school history.
A year ago after transferring from Southern Methodist University, Mitchell was an honorable mention All-Big Sky Conference selection and was the Most Outstanding Player in the NCAA Division I Championship Game won by the Eagles 20-19 over Delaware.
The Payton Award will celebrate its 25th anniversary this season and be presented at The Sports Network National Awards Banquet on Jan. 6 in Frisco, Texas, on the eve of the NCAA Division I Championship Game.
Finishing the regular season 6-5 – and with the requisite six wins to be considered for the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision – the Eagles found out the following day that it wasn’t lucky enough to be selected to the 20-team field. The defending NCAA Division I Champions, the Eagles overcame a rash of injuries to win six of their last seven games after a 0-4 start.
