Kaufman Improves Four Marks at Pro Day

Six Eastern players test in front of 18 scouts on an afternoon of snow, sleet, hail and even a power outage

The weather conditions weren’t good by any stretch of the imagination, but the marks were much better for six former Eastern Washington University football players who tested in front of 18 National Football League scouts on EWU’s annual Pro Day Wednesday (March 6) in Cheney, Wash.

Wide receiver Brandon Kaufman, who participated in February’s NFL Combine in Indianapolis, Ind., improved on four marks, and several other players had impressive marks as well. But the weather – including a deluge of snow, sleet and rain that even caused a five-minute power outage – forced some of the testing indoors and limited the passing and catching drills scheduled later in the afternoon.

“I think it was a really good Pro Day – everyone did really well,” said Kaufman, who helped the Eagles to the NCAA Division I title in 2010 and a semifinal appearance in the playoffs this past fall. “The weather wasn’t ideal, but we were all willing to run routes – we’ve played in snow like this before.”

From what he registered at the combine, Kaufman improved his vertical jump by two inches, his 40-yard dash by a tenth-of-a-second, his 60-yard shuttle time by .30 and his cone drill clocking by .28. He did not do the broad jump or the bench press on Wednesday.

Fellow wide receiver Greg Herd had a 40 time of 4.50 and bench pressed 225 pounds an impressive 13 times. Wide receiver Nicholas Edwards was even better, with 16 repetitions on the bench press, and also had impressive marks of 40 inches in the vertical jump and 4.09 in the 20-yard shuttle.

Quarterback Kyle Padron had a 4.78 time in the 40, which was particularly impressive considering his 6-foot-3, 221-pound frame. Offensive tackle Will Post also tested on Pro Day, and linebacker Zach Johnson was only measured for height and weight because of off-season shoulder surgery.

Because of the weather, only the 40 took place outdoors, just before the storm hit. The rest of the running drills took place on a new surface in the EWU Strength and Conditioning Center.

“Overall I think all the numbers were good, even though we went inside and had to run on that new surface, which we were unfamiliar with,” said Kaufman. “But I think we all did well on it and adjusted. That’s all you can do.”

At the combine, Kaufman had a 68.0 grade that ranked 18th among the group of 38 wide receivers. The second-tallest (6-foot-5) and seventh-biggest receiver at the combine (216 pounds), Kaufman also had a vertical jump of 33 1/2 inches in Indianapolis. That combination of attributes helped him consistently out-position and out-jump defensive backs for the ball in his 42-game career for the Eagles.

“That was a great experience – you just have to appreciate the process and be grateful you are there,” he said. “It was a long four days, but overall I’m extremely grateful I got the chance to meet with all the teams and showcase myself in front of everybody.”

The two-time FCS All-American caught 221 passes for 3,731 yards (16.9 per catch) and 33 touchdowns in his career as a 37-game starter. He had a FCS-record 1,850 yards receiving in 2012, to go along with 93 receptions and 16 TDs. Besides Kaufman, Herd and Johnson are both represented by Cameron Foster and the Foster Easley Sports Management Group of Seattle, which also represents former Eagle and NFL All-Pro offensive tackle Michael Roos.

“We just keep training – finally some football training,” added Kaufman. “We get to run some hills and routes finally instead of just running in a straight line and using starts which we never might use again.”
