HS:Graduated from Berkeley HS in 2008. Smith was the Alameda Contra Costa Athletic League MVP. He also earned third team All-East Bay honors from the Contra Costa Times, which also selected him to its "Top 20 Cream of the Crop" squad. He rushed for 1,170 yards (9.5 per carry) with seven touchdowns as a senior despite missing three games with an injury.
