Eastern's Win Total Hits Seven for Second Time Since 1996

March 24, 2007

The Eastern Washington University men's tennis team (7-6) hit seven wins for just the second time in the past 11 years with a clutch 4-3 win over host Utah State (4-5) on Saturday afternoon (March 24). Today's contest came down to the No. 4 singles match, where Patrick Millican earned a win in the only three-set contest of the day, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, over Dantley Young.

Last season, EWU went 10-8 to record its most number of victories and first winning record since the 1985 squad went 1985. Other than that season, the last time Eastern hit the seven-win mark was in 1996 (7-15).

The Eagles grabbed momentum in the match with three incredibly close doubles contests. Two were decided by just one game, while the third was a two-game affair.

At No. 3, Jonathan Davis and Millican teamed up to defeat Lukas Bouton and Fernando Gallegos, 8-6. The pair has now won 7-of-8 contests.

In the second position, Keithan Gregg and Nico Riego de Dios outlasted Hannes Schenk and Dantley Young in a thriller, 9-8. The match between each team's top doubles tandem saw Pannhara Mam and Kyle Schraeder defeat Oscar Ericsson and Jonas Tyden, 8-7.

Eagle singles wins came at the Nos. 1, 2 and 4 positions. Mam defeated Schenk, 6-1, 6-4, for his sixth straight win in a match played at court one, Schraeder topped Ericcson, 7-6, 6-3, on the second court, and Millican put away the team win with his singles victory at No. 4.

The Eagles are 2-0 on their six-match five-state 3,229-mile Spring Break road trip.

Eastern Washington returns to Big Sky Conference action on Sunday (March 25), as the Eagles (3-2 BSC) will travel up to Pocatello to take on the Idaho State Bengals (1-8, 0-3 BSC). First serve will be at 9 a.m. PT. The Eagles have already tied a school record for conference wins in a season, as the 2006 squad went 3-3 in Big Sky play.
