Eagles Go 2-1 Against Fresno Schools

March 26, 2008

The Eastern Washington University men's tennis team fell to Fresno Pacific, one of the best teams in the NAIA ranks, by a 7-0 score on Tuesday night (March 25) before dropping a 6-1 decision to No. 52 Fresno Pacific and defeating Fresno City College 7-0, both on Wednesday (March 26).

The Eagles are now 10-5 and have reached a double-digit win total for the third straight year, especially impressive considering Eastern Washington had that many wins just one previous time since joining the NCAA Division I ranks in 1984 (13-10 in 1985). Eastern went 14-12 last year and 10-8 the year before.

Eastern was swept by FPU, a team which is now 13-0 and had defeated No. 12 Illinois 4-3 in an exhibition match prior to facing the Eagles. Against the nationally-ranked Bulldogs, Fresno State narrowly swept the three doubles matches before taking 5-of-6 singles contests. Art Karas had an impressive 7-5, 6-4 win on court five.

The Eagles are now set to continue its Big Sky Conference slate with a road contest versus Sacramento State (10-7, 4-0 BSC). Eastern Washington (3-0 BSC) and the Hornets are two of just three undefeated league teams; Weber State (2-0 BSC) is the other. First serve for the EWU-Sacramento State match is set for 1 p.m. on Friday (March 28).

In tonight's contest, the Tigers took control of the contest by sweeping the three doubles contests and then taking the first two singles matches to finish play to take a commanding 3-0 lead.
