Eagles Complete Road Trip with 5-1 Mark

March 30, 2007

The Eastern Washington University men's tennis team saw its five-match winning streak come to an end on the last stop of its six-match 3,229-mile road trip, as the Eagles dropped a 6-1 decision to New Mexico State on Friday afternoon (March 30).

The Eagles (10-7) were able to grab control of the match by winning 2-of-3 doubles contests to earn the doubles point, but New Mexico State (7-8) stormed back by winning all six singles contests, five of them in straight sets, to earn its victory.

On this road trip, Eastern Washington rallied from losing the doubles point to claim victories three times (after starting the season 0-6 when in that predicament) and have now lost for the first time in 2007 when earning that tally (7-1).

At No. 1 singles, Eastern's duo of Pannhara Mam and Kyle Schraeder outlasted Stjepan Beg and Roman Stoisavljevic by an 8-3 score to snap a cold snap they had, having lost 3-of-4 contests entering today's play. The two are now 10-6 in dual-match play, 12-7 overall.

Jonathan Davis and Patrick Millican outscored Brice Magnanou and Eduardo Salas, 8-5, on the third court to earn their victory.

The best performance of singles play for the Eagles came from Mam who, determined not to let his nine-match losing streak come to an end easily, finally fell to Gustave Diep, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6. He still has a very impressive 18-6 singles mark in 2006-07, 12-5 in the dual-match season.

The Eagles now return to Cheney and take some well-deserved time off of competition before playing host to its biggest non-conference match of the season, versus Gonzaga. First serve for the rivalry contest will be at 3 p.m. on April 10. That will start off a busy week for the Eagles, as they will play host to four contests that week.
