Eagles Defeat Idaho to Earn 11th win, Most Since 1985

April 14, 2007

The Eastern Washington University men's tennis team rode the momentum of winning a dramatic doubles point to defeat Idaho, 4-1, on Saturday evening (April 14). The victory moved EWU to 11-8 on the season, marking the most wins for any Eagle men's tennis team since the 1985 squad went 13-10. Last year's team went 10-8 to record the school's first winning record and double-digit win season since that 1985 team.

In other Eagle record book news, Pannhara Mam tied the school record for singles wins in a dual-match season with his 13th of the season. His 6-3, 6-0 defeat of Stanislav Glukhov moved Mam to 13-6 in the spring (10-6 at No. 1 and 19-7 overall in 2006-07). The 13 victories tie Brian Hart (1996) and Sean McGoffin (1990) for the school mark in records dating to 1989.

Also, the doubles teams of Mam and Kyle Schraeder and Jonathan Davis and Patrick Millican each have 11 wins, which is one shy of the school-record 12 earned by the 1999 doubles team of Ryan Moran and Shane Stiner.

After the teams split the first two doubles matches to complete play, all eyes turned to the No. 3 contest between Kevin Erickson and Keithan Gregg and Paulo Miranda and Joel Trudel. In that match, it was the Eagle duo that pulled away for a dramatic 9-8 (7-5) victory. Today was the first time the two played as a doubles team since going 1-1 at the Duck Classic in Eugene, Ore., on Nov. 11.

The Eagles then quickly earned the team win with three straight singles victories to build an insurmountable 4-0 advantage. Mam and Millican each won in straight sets, while Schraeder earned a three-set victory. Mam and Schraeder each snapped uncharacteristic losing streaks (two and three, respectively), while Millican won his second straight contest.

The match with the Vandals (6-14) was played at the Spokane Athletic Club due to rain and an already-scheduled event at Eastern's indoor facility, the Jim Thorpe Fieldhouse. The match with Whitman scheduled for this morning was cancelled.

The unexpected late start of the match (6 p.m. as opposed to the original starting time of 2 p.m.) caused the last two singles contests to go unfinished. Both contests were either between the second and third sets or just beginning the final stanza.

On Sunday (April 15), the Eagles will play its final home contest of the season. The start time for that match has been pushed back two hours and will now commence at 11 a.m. The Fieldhouse will be available for use in the event of rain.
