Karas Moves up Rankings as Eagles Fall to UC Irvine

The Eastern Washington University men's tennis team (12-10) fell to the UC Irvine Anteaters (11-10), 5-2, in a Friday afternoon (April 20) match played at the Appleton Tennis Center in Boise, Idaho. The contest was the penultimate match of the season, as the Eagles will wrap up regular-season action versus No. 23 Boise State (25-5) on Saturday morning.

In today's match, Art Karas moved up the single-season wins chart in the school record book with his 13th victory of the season, 6-3, 7-5, over Andrei Radulescu on the sixth court. The victory moved him just one behind Pannhara Mam for the top spot, as Mam has earned 14 victories so far this season. Records date back to 1989.

Also earning a singles victory was Daniel Pez, as the sophomore snapped a three-match losing streak with a three-set 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 defeat of Shimpei Suzuki.

Keithan Gregg and Kevin Erickson claimed an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles, as well. UC Irvine won the other two doubles matches by a pair of games each to go into singles play with a 1-0 lead.

With Montana's 5-2 defeat of Montana State earlier on Friday, the Grizzlies clinch the No. 2 seed for the upcoming Big Sky Conference Tournament. The Eagles will play as the No. 3 seed and their opponent for the first round will be Weber State. The Wildcats clinched the tournament's final berth with a 7-0 sweep of Idaho State on Thursday. The final seedings for the tournament, in order, are: Sacramento State, Montana, Eastern Washington, Northern Arizona, Montana State, Weber State.

The Eagles will wrap up the regular season with a 9:30 a.m. PT showdown with No. 23 Boise State (25-5) on Saturday. The Broncos, Eastern's highest-ranked opponent this season, will enter the contest riding a 29-match home winning streak. Boise State is 16-0 at home this season.

A number of Eagles will challenge nationally-ranked singles and doubles players. Luke Shields is the 15th-ranked singles player in the country, while Clancy Shields is ranked 53rd. The doubles team of Luke Shields and Piotr Dilaj is ranked 56th.
