Second-seeded Pannhara Mam picked up two victories to advance to Sunday's singles semifinals on the second day of the Red Lion Invitational Men's Tennis Tournament Saturday (Sept. 30) at the EWU Sports and Recreation Center.
Mam picked up a straight-sets win Saturday to advance to the quarterfinals, where he defeated 10th-seeded Roman Dojcak of Gonzaga 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. Fellow sophomore Kyle Schraeder, the No. 7 seed, also advanced to the quarters, but lost to top-seeded Alex Strom of Portland 6-4, 6-0.
Besides Pam and Strom, fifth-seeded Stuart Wing of Montana and fourth-seeded Filip Zivkovic of Portland advanced to Sunday's semis.
Last year as freshmen, Mam and Schraeder held down Eastern's top two positions and combined for a 12-7 record as the school's No. 1 doubles team. Mam, a graduate of McKay High School in Salem, Ore., was 12-5 in singles competition last year. Schraeder, who is from Sumner, Wash., and graduated from Auburn Riverside High School, was 9-9.
Eastern was 0-3 in doubles competition on Saturday after going 0-4 on Friday. Eastern winners in the first round of singles competition on Friday included Art Karas, Kyle Cruzat, Keithan Gregg, Patrick Millican and Brian Garfield.
