Nico Riego de Dios of the Eastern Washington University men’s tennis team was named the Big Sky Conference Player of the Week for his outstanding play over the weekend. He helped lead the Eagles to a dominating 7-0 victory over Montana State and played well in a tight 4-3 non-conference loss to Idaho.
In the win over the Bobcats on Saturday (March 7), he teamed with Kyle Schraeder for an 8-4 victory at No. 1 doubles in the first match to complete that day to help propel the Eagles to their convincing win. In singles, Riego de Dios won at No. 1 in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1, to complete his perfect day.
Against the Vandals the next day, he and Schraeder helped the Eagles to a sweep of the doubles matches with an 8-6 victory on court one. That result clinched for Eastern the doubles tally. In singles, he played Idaho’s top player to the wire before falling in a tight three-set affair, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
For the season, Riego de Dios and Schraeder have already earned 10 wins and are off to a 10-3 start this season, all at the No. 1 position. In singles, the junior has gone 7-6 against top competition with all of his matches being at Nos. 1 and 2 singles.
The award is the second of his career, as he also earned Big Sky weekly accolades on April 8, 2008.
Riego de Dios and the Eagles (7-6, 2-1 BSC) play host to Montana (2-1, 1-0 BSC) in a Big Sky match at 3 p.m. on Friday. The contest will be Eastern Washington’s final one at home until Gonzaga visits on April 9.
