April 9, 2009
The 2008 Eastern Washington men’s tennis team will be honored prior to this season’s final home match on Friday afternoon (April 10) with the unveiling of the Big Sky Conference championship banner. The ceremonies will begin at 2:40 p.m., while the Eagles will face Portland State in a league contest at 3 p.m.
Attending the event will be head coach Darren Haworth, athletics director Bill Chaves and president Dr. Rodolfo Arévalo. It will occur at the Jim Thorpe Fieldhouse, which is located directly to the northwest of the Sports and Recreation outdoor courts and to the south of Reese Court. The match to follow will take place either there or, in the case of cooperating weather, on the outdoor courts.
Also, an incredible senior class will be honored at that time. Art Karas, Pannhara Mam and Kyle Schraeder have played all four years at Eastern, while Daniel Pez has been an Eagle for three seasons after transferring from Morehead State. During the past four seasons, the Eagles have gone 56-35, 20-8 in Big Sky play, a complete turnaround from the previous four years, which saw Eastern Washington record a 6-52 mark, 1-25 in Big Sky matches.
The match following the ceremonies will see Eastern (14-8, 5-2 BSC) close out Big Sky play against the Vikings (9-11, 2-5 BSC). A win would see the Eagles likely finish in third place in the league standings with a shot at second depending on the results of remaining Big Sky matches to be played by other league schools.
