Eagle Men's Tennis Squad Signs Spaniard

Dec. 9, 2008

Julian Sanchez has signed a letter of agreement to attend Eastern Washington University and play for the men's tennis squad, head coach Darren Haworth announced. He will begin his Eastern career with the 2009 spring dual-match portion of the schedule.

Sanchez is a native of Ciudad Real, Spain, and attended Universal High School. He plays his club tennis for Castilla de la Mancha. The 6-0 player has seen his national ranking steadily improve and he has been ranked as high as 275th among all Spanish players (including full-time professionals). Sanchez has also won several open tournaments.

"Julian is a great athlete with a big game," Haworth said. "He is really strong off the baseline and has got great volleys. Julian is going to help deepen our lineup, and we expect him to bring a solid work ethic to the team."

Sanchez and the Eagles kick off their spring schedule in the Emerald City with two matches on Jan. 10, versus Washington at noon and against Seattle University at 5 p.m.
