Eagles Travel to Flagstaff for Big Sky Championships

Feb. 24, 2009

After competing in seven meets, the Eastern Washington University track and field teams will compete Friday and Saturday (Feb. 27-28) at the Big Sky Conference Indoor Championships in Flagstaff, Ariz. A total of 39 EWU student-athletes -- 16 women and 23 men -- will try to earn all-conference honors by placing in the top three in their event.

Last year, Eastern’s men finished seventh with 21 points while the women were eighth with 34 points. Sacramento State won both the men’s and women’s titles.

Three Eagles who have earned All-Big Sky honors previously will compete this week. Chad Butorac, a senior from Northport, Wash., was runner-up indoors at the 2007 championship and was third in the 200 in 2006. He will compete in the 400 this year.

Cameron Moore, the 2008 outdoor triple jump champion, leads a group of five Eagles competing in that event in Flagstaff. Nicole Luckenbach was second outdoors in the hammer in 2008 and will compete in the weight throw this week.

The meet will begin Friday morning with the men’s heptathlon, including EWU’s Kersee Lind, who finished ninth last year. The regular portion of the meet begins Friday at 3:15 p.m. with the start of field events, with running events beginning at 4:30 p.m. On Saturday, field events begin at 10 a.m. and running events start at 12:20 p.m.

The Eagles look to be particularly strong in the men’s triple jump and long jump. Moore a senior from Spokane, Wash., is ranked first in the conference in the triple jump with a mark of 48-4 1/2. Kurt Williams is ranked fifth with an effort of 47-1 and is third in the long jump with a mark of 23-5 1/2. Armand Hopkins ranks sixth in the triple jump with a mark of 46-7 1/2 and eight in the long jump with an effort of 23-1 1/4.
