Eagles Head to Pocatello for Outdoor Championships

May 7, 2007

The Eastern Washington University track and field teams will take more than 40 athletes to compete at the 2007 Big Sky Outdoor Championships on May 9-12 at Davis Field in Pocatello, Idaho.

Last year, Eastern's men placed third and the women placed sixth as both equaled their best-ever league finishes. This year, Eagle athletes met Big Sky qualifying standards 47 times, including 23 for men and 24 for women. Eastern expects to take a total of 24 men and 20 women to Pocatello.

"Our goal is another top three finish," said EWU head men's coach Stan Kerr. "But looking at the individual performance lists, Weber State, Idaho State and Northern Arizona are particularly tough."

"Our young athletes are coming on strong and that will help our team placing," said women's head coach Marcia Mecklenburg. "Last year we finished sixth, which was better than we were expecting. We hope this year the same thing will happen."

Senior David Paul, the 2006 Big Sky Conference outdoor champion in the discus, is looking to make it two in a row this year. Paul is ranked second in school history at 185-0, which ranks first this season in the BSC. He is also ranked first in the conference in the hammer throw with a school-record throw of 216-11 that ranks second in Big Sky history.

In the shot put, Paul is currently ranked fourth with a throw of 56-10 after placing third in the 2006 BSC indoor season. He already qualified for the NCAA West Regional Championships (May 25-26) in all three events.

"David is looking to collect some hardware," Kerr added. "He is taking this event as a precursor for regionals and the NCAA Championships. He is a terrific team guy and isn't taking these championships lightly, however. He wants to come away with at least two titles."

Also looking to bring home a Big Sky title is senior Chad Chambers in the high jump. He is currently ranked first in the conference at 6-10 3/4 and already qualified for the NCAA West Regional Championships.

"Chad's chances for a championship in the high jump are excellent," said Kerr. "He has been jumping well as of late and it is a great time to peak and get ready for regionals."

On the women's side, senior Carolee Gutierrez is looking to capture a title in the javelin and the discus. Gutierrez is the current Eastern and Big Sky record-holder in the javelin at 167-9 and ranked first in the conference. But right on her heels is Montana State's Kim Berg, who won titles in 2004 and 2005, and has a season best throw of 162-4. Now-graduated Stephanie Ulmer from Eastern won titles in 2002, 2003 and 2006. Gutierrez also holds the school record in the discus and is ranked first in the conference at 160-9.

She is ranked fourth in the hammer (170-4) and seventh in the shot put (45-6 1/4). Gutierrez qualified for the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Championships in all four events and qualified for the NCAA West Regional Championships in the discus and javelin.

"It would be great if Carolee could finish her career with a couple of championships," added Mecklenburg. "It will be a little more difficult for her than it looks on paper in the javelin. Berg is right behind her, ranked second in the Big Sky."

Also qualifying for the NCAA West Regional Championships is senior pole vaulter Sarah Hegna. Hegna is ranked second in the Big Sky at 12-11 1/2, behind the 14-2 1/2 vault of defending champion Ellie Rudy of Montana State. Hegna placed second at the outdoor championships last season, as well as indoors this season as Rudy went on to win the NCAA Division I title.

"Anything can happen in the pole vault," said Mecklenburg. "Sarah has high goals and is ready to vault against Rudy, the national indoor champion."

Other Eastern athletes competing this week that have previously earned All-Big Sky Conference honors include: Chad Butorac (2007 Indoor: 2nd in the 400-meter run; 2006 Outdoor: 3rd in 400-meter run; 2006 Indoor: 3rd in 200-meter run); Tyler Cathey (2006 Outdoor: 2nd in javelin); Jeff Kaune (2007 Indoor: 2nd place in triple jump); Curtis Suver - (2007 Indoor: 3rd place in 5000-meter run) and Teanna Meinhold (2007 Indoor: 3rd in triple jump; 2005 Outdoor: 3rd in triple jump).
