Eagle Named Big Sky Conference Athlete of the Week

Sept. 10, 2008

Paul Limpf of the Eastern Washington University cross country team was named Big Sky Conference Athlete of the Week after winning the first-ever Clash of the Inland Northwest Saturday (Sept. 6).

Limpf, a senior from Vancouver, Wash., had a time of 19:33.6 in the men’s 6,000-meter race to help give his team a first-place victory over Gonzaga, Washington State and University of Idaho. Teammate Alex Smyth finished second with a time of 19:42.1.

"I'm really happy for Paul as it is well deserved," said head cross country coach Chris Zeller. "He trained with a clear focus this summer and it's great to see it paid dividends right out of the gate. What was even more fun for him than the individual victory was the performance of his teammates. They're really coming together as a team and showed everyone this may be a team to keep your eye on."

"Paul is certainly headed in the right direction," added Zeller. "It's a long season, so the goal is to be patient and keep plugging away, but I like his chances at this stage of the game."

Limpf was All-BSC with a fifth-place finish at the conference championship in 2007.

Limpf and the EWU cross country team will be competing Sept. 20 at the Sundodger Invitational in Seattle, Wash.
