The Eastern Washington University men’s and women’s track teams will open their indoor season at home Saturday (Dec. 6) at the EWU Candy Cane Invitational against the University of Montana.
The field events will begin at 11 a.m. in the Jim Thorpe Fieldhouse followed by the running events at 1 p.m. The meet will include the sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers and throwers, with no races longer than 55 meters. There is no admission charge.
This is believed to be the first-ever indoor dual between the Eagles and the Grizzlies. A total of 40 males and 43 females are expected to compete, with marks counting towards the qualifying standards for the Big Sky Championships.
"The sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers and throwers get to spike up, throw on a uniform and hit their marks," said head men’s track and field coach Stan Kerr. "The focus of the week is to remember their goals, and Saturday take the big step towards beating and accomplishing those goals."
The Eagles return 38 letter winners, including 15 women and 23 men to this year’s track and field team. The only returning indoor placer at the Big Sky Conference Championships last season was Erica Chaney, who finished second in the shot put but will be red shirting the 2008-09 indoor season.
The Eagles will conclude their indoor season at the Big Sky Conference Indoor Championships on Feb. 27-28 in Flagstaff, Ariz.
