Fresh off of earning First Team All-Big Sky honors last season, junior guard Lexie Nelson has been tabbed a 2013-14 Big Sky Preseason First Team pick by College Sports Madness, announced by the site Wednesday, Oct. 2.
Nelson started all 32 games for the Eagles last season, leading the team with an average of 14 points per game. She shot better than 41 percent from the field and over 37 percent from three-point range. Her free throw percentage of 85.5 topped the league and ranked 27th nationally.
The Butte, Mont., native led EWU in scoring 14 different times last year, notching at least 20 points in five games. She also finished third on the team with 70 assists and fifth with 99 rebounds.
"Lexie has truly earned every award and honor that she has received," head coach Wendy Schuller said. "She's just a worker. She's really honed her game to a high level in every single area because of her tremendous work ethic."
Eastern finished with a 19-13 record, including a 14-6 mark in Big Sky play, good for third in the league standings. The team received a bid to the WNIT for the second time in four years, losing a heartbreaker in double overtime at PAC-12 member Washington in the first round.
The Eagles open their 2013-14 campaign on Friday, Nov. 1, when they take on the Master's College in an exhibition contest. Tip-off time is set for 6 p.m.
