Eagles Put Away Pesky Mustangs In Exhibition Contest

Ashenfelter led four Eagles in double-figures with game-high 23 points

Cheney, Wash. – Senior forward Aubrey Ashenfelter led four players in double figures with a game-high 23 points as the Eastern Washington women's basketball team held off a game Master's College squad, 87-74, in an exhibition contest Friday, Nov. 1, at Reese Court.

"Overall, we accomplished what we wanted to tonight," head coach Wendy Schuller said. "We got to play a lot of players, and I saw some good things offensively. Give Master's credit as they shot the ball extremely well. We have some work to do defensively, but it was good to get a game under our belt, and to face some adversity down the stretch this early will only help us down the road."

Ashenfelter's 23 points came on 8-of-12 shooting, including a near-perfect 6-of-7 from the free throw line. She added a team-best seven rebounds.

Junior Kylie Huerta finished with a double-double, notching 17 points and 11 assists to go along with three steals. She knocked down four three-pointers and hit three of her four free throw attempts.

Both sophomore Hayley Hodgins and senior Laura Hughes tallied 13 points apiece. Hodgins added three assists and five rebounds to her stat line while Hughes contributed six rebounds, four of which came on the offensive end.

Eastern raced out to a 12-6 lead, using a pair of three-pointers from Hodgins to take an early advantage. The Eagles extended their lead to nine, 17-8, at the 15-minute mark on Hodgins' third triple of the first half, but TMC rallied back to within three, 19-16, three minutes later. A layup from Hughes and a free throw from Hodgins gave EWU a six-point advantage, 22-16, with 11:35 on the clock, but the visitors cut the deficit to one, 23-22, on a pair of free throws from Whitney Best with just under seven minutes left in the half.

A triple from Huerta put Eastern up four at the 6:03 mark, but the Mustangs answered with a 6-0 run to take its first lead of the night, 28-26, with 3:29 on the clock. Another three-pointer from Huerta put the Eagles up, 29-28, with just over two minutes left, followed by layups from freshmen Jade Redmon and Bethany Montgomery and a three-pointer from Hodgins gave EWU a seven-point advantage, 36-29, with 58 seconds remaining. A triple from Zoe Scott put a momentary stop to Eastern's run, but a free throw from Redmon and a three-pointer from Huerta put the Eagles up eight, 40-32, heading into halftime.

A three-pointer from Ashenfelter gave Eastern a double-digit lead just seconds into the second half, but Master's crawled back to within three, 43-40, on a layup from Best at the 17:33 mark. The Eagles promptly went on an 8-0 run over the next two minutes, punctuated by a jumper from freshman Hanna Mack with 15:33 on the clock to restore an 11-point lead.

The Mustangs refused to go quietly, pulling back to within two, 57-55, on a three-pointer from Megan Lindsley with 11:41 remaining. Each time the Eagles looked poised to pull away, the visitors responded with a bucket, keeping EWU within striking distance for the next five minutes. Up just one, 67-66, with 6:02 left, a layup from Ashenfelter and a three-pointer from Huerta gave Eastern a six-point lead. TMC would cut the deficit to four three more times down the stretch, but a jumper from Ashenfelter gave the Eagles an 80-73 advantage with a little over two minutes left. After the Mustangs came up empty on its ensuing possession, they were forced to foul. EWU converted 7-of-8 free throws over the final two minutes to seal the win.

Eastern shot 42-percent for the game compared to Master's College's 40-percent clip. Eastern made 10-of-21 three-pointers, including 7-of-14 in the first half. The Eagles also made 21 free throws while the Mustangs made just 13 on 23 attempts.

EWU outrebounded TMC 46-38, grabbing 19 offensive rebounds. Mack led the way with five offensive boards for the Eagles. Both teams committed 21 turnovers.
