@EWUWBB's Nelson, Hodgins Earn All-Big Sky Honors
Ogden, Utah – Lexie Nelson and Hayley Hodgins represented the Eastern Washington women's basketball team on the All-Big Sky Conference Team for the 2013-14 season, the league office announced Monday, Mar. 10.
Nelson was a first team pick for the second consecutive season while Hodgins was tabbed an honorable mention selection.
"I'm very excited for Lexie and Hayley," head coach Wendy Schuller said. "Those are two players that put in a lot of time and are really committed to this team and this program and to becoming better players every single day. I'm excited for them that they were rewarded for their hard work."
A redshirt junior from Butte, Mont., Nelson leads Eastern and ranks fifth in the Big Sky in scoring with an average of 16.1 points per game. She scored in double figures in all but four of EWU's 29 games, going for at least 20 points seven times. Her 467 points currently rank sixth all-time in EWU single-season history.
One of the most prolific three-pointer shooters in the nation, Nelson leads the league and ranks seventh nationally in three-point percentage, connecting on 44.7-percent of her shots from long range. Her 74 made triples rank second all-time in EWU single-season history, and she needs just three more to set a new school record.
Nelson also paces the Eagles in free throw percentage, shooting 86.1 percent from the line.
Last season's Big Sky Freshman of the Year, Hodgins ranks second on the team and 10th in the conference in scoring with an average of 13.6 points per game. She has reached double-figures in 24 of the Eagles' 29 games, pouring in at least 20 points three times.
Along with Nelson, Hodgins has made Eastern a nightmare to defend for opponents, shooting 40.1 percent from three-point range, a mark that ranks second on the team and third in the conference. Her 64 made three-pointers currently rank fourth all-time in EWU single-season history.
The Pasco native also ranks third on the team in rebounding with an average of 4.3 boards per game while racking up 50 steals and shooting 83.1 percent from the free throw line.
Eastern opens play in the Big Sky Tournament against fifth-seeded Idaho State on Thursday, Mar. 13, at 5:30 p.m. CST. This year's tournament will be hosted by North Dakota in Grand Forks, N.D.
