Eagles Take 11th at WSU Cougar Cup

Senior Kellie Holmstedt leads Eagles for second week in a row with top-25 finish

The Eastern Washington University women's golf team finished in 11th place at the third annual WSU Cougar Cup at the Palouse Ridge Golf Course in Pullman, Wash. The Eagles played 54 holes over three days (Sept. 13-15), compiling a total team score of 993 (339-323-326).

Senior Kellie Holmstedt led the Eagles with another solid performance, as the North Bend, Ore., native finished tied for 22nd out of 67 total golfers. Holmstedt shot a three-round total of 237 (80-75-82), and carded six total birdies, which tied for the third-most of any player at the tournament.

Sophomore Jayme Carbon finished second on the Eagle squad, after turning in an impressive 77 in the third and final round of play in Pullman. Carbon finished the tournament with a total score of 243 (82-84-77), which included five birdies. The Auburn, Wash., native tied for 42nd overall.

"Kellie and Jayme have played very solid in both our early-season tournaments," said EWU head coach Brenda Howe. "I am proud of their focus on the greens and their execution of the things we have worked on in practice."

Junior Kylie Ray carded an 86-85-88 to finish third on the team and tied for 61st overall. Rounding out the scoring for Eastern was sophomore Morgan Lee, who fired a three-round total of 261 (91-85-85). Sophomore Dana Stapleton also competed at the WSU Cougar Cup, as she finished tied for 64th. Stapleton struggled in the first round, but found her stroke in the subsequent rounds, as she shot a 79 and 82 on the second and third day of competition. Stapleton also recorded four birdies throughout the tournament.

The host school of Washington State University won the team title by just one stroke over Washington, as the Cougars finished at 917 (314-300-303) and the Huskies at 918 (326-294-298). Gonzaga took third (920), while Big Sky Conference foes Montana, Montana State and Sacramento State finished in fifth, ninth and 10th place, respectively.

The Eagles will be back in action on Sept. 27-28 when they travel to Aurora, Ore., for the Portland State/Oregon State Invitational at the Langdon Farms Golf Club.
