Eagles Take 14th at Rose City Collegiate

Carbon leads Eastern with top-40 finish

Playing in its third tournament in as many weeks, the Eastern Washington University women's golf team finished 14th at the 2011 Rose City Collegiate, held Monday (Sept. 26) and Tuesday (Sept. 27) at the Langdon Farms Golf Club in Portland, Ore.

Of its first three events of the fall season, this tournament proved to be most challenging for EWU, as the Eags posted a total team score of 991 (331-334-326) to finish last in the 14-team field, which did include four of nine Big Sky schools.

With no seniors on the squad this year, Eastern is relying on several inexperienced players to carry some of the load. The Eags will have one more chance to get those younger members more time on the greens before heading into the off-season. Eastern will play at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic Oct. 8-9 in Palm Desert, Calif., to wrap up the first half of the 2011-12 campaign.

The Eagles were led at the Rose City Collegiate by junior Jayme Carbon, who carded a three-round total of 240 (81-82-77) to tie for 40th on the individual leaderboard.

Like Carbon, junior Morgan Lee turned in her best score of the tourney in the third and final round. She finished second on the Eagle squad and tied for 48th overall after firing a 243 (82-83-78).

Freshman Caitilin Rice and sophomore Sara Callagy tied for 70th with matching scores of 254. Rice fired an 86-81-87, while Callagy carded an 82 in the first round, followed by an 88 and 84 in the second and third, respectively.

Junior Neddy Martiznez also competed in Portland, and saw improvement with each round. She finished with a 36-hole total of 276 (98-90-88).
