Mikulecky Named Big Sky Golfer of Week

March 14, 2008

Eastern Washington University women's golfer Marli Mikulecky has been named Co-Big Sky Conference Golfer of the Week, sharing the honor with Sacramento State's Samantha Saffold. Mikulecky earned the honors after she hit a hole in one on Wednesday (March 12) and set a school record for lowest round that day with a 67.

The Eagles have now incredibly seen four different players earn Big Sky GOW accolades this year, a first in league history. Six times previously had a league school earned four or more weekly honors, but never by as many as four different players. Easter Washington had never previously won four awards in the same season, regardless of how many players were honored.

The previous Eastern Washington honorees this season were Kristina Gargaro (Nov. 1), Kellie Holmstedt (Sept. 26) and Chloe Nelson (Sept. 12).

Mikulecky broke the school record previously held by Jeanie Bagnell at 68, who shot that mark in the second and final round of the Inland Empire Intercollegiate on April 2, 2002. The junior rallied from a seemingly inauspicious start to her day, as she three-putted her first hole. But, two holes later, she nailed her ace and rode that momentum to her record performance.

She also helped the team to a 288 round, its lowest since the 2004 squad shot a 286 in the middle round of the Big Sky Championship on April 20 of that year.

Next up, the Eagles will play at the NCAA West Regional Preview from March 31-April 1 at the Lincoln Hills Golf Club in Lincoln, Calif.
