Sept. 21, 2008
The Eastern Washington University women’s golf team, fresh off an impressive 2007-08 season that saw the team win two team titles and an individual crown and play well the entire season, will commence its 2008-09 campaign on Monday (Sept. 22).
“It's nice to be back competing again,” head coach Marc Hughes said. “We have a lot of competition in a short span of time (four tournaments in four weeks), and our schedule is very difficult this fall, but I expect us to respond. We aren't a young team anymore, and returning three first team All-Big Sky players provides some level of comfort. That said, nothing will be handed to us. If we are successful, it will be because we have earned it.”
The Eagles will co-host The Bulldogs and Eagles Invitational with Gonzaga at The Links Golf Club in Post Falls, Idaho. The tournament will start on Monday and conclude on Tuesday (Sept. 23). The course layout is 6,123 yards, par 72. Action starts at 8 a.m. on Monday for two rounds and at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday for a single round.
Team participating include Eastern Washington, Gonzaga, British Columbia, Cal Poly, Idaho State, Montana, Montana State, Portland State, South Dakota State, Southern Utah, UC Riverside, Utah Valley, Victoria and Western Washington. More than half of the Big Sky Conference membership will be competing (EWU, ISU, UM, MSU, PSU).
“It should be an interesting start for us this year,” Hughes said. “We are down one player (Kellie Holmstedt for health reasons), which opens up an opportunity for someone else to step up. We obviously return some really good Big Sky players, but I will have a better feel for where we are at, top to bottom, after a couple of tournaments.”
