Black rides All-Tourney honors to first-career conference award
Sophomore forward Cassie Black, from the Eastern Washington University women’s soccer team, was recognized by the Big Sky Conference as Offensive Player of the Week for her strong performance last weekend (Sept. 7-9) at the Viking Classic in Hillsboro, Ore. This is the first-career weekly honor for the Battle Ground, Wash., native.
Black was particularly impressive against Boise State on Sunday (Sept. 9). She contributed two goals in 75 minutes of play, which helped Eastern secure a 3-1 win – its first ever against the Broncos and first in the 2012 season.
She put the Eagles on the board at the 20-minute mark with an unassisted goal after breaking down the Boise State defense. In the second half, with only three seconds remaining on the game clock, Black again broke away for another unassisted goal – her second of the season, and eighth career tally. She also played 57 minutes against Utah State on Friday (Sept. 7), recording three shots with two on goal.
A starter in four of Eastern’s six games this season, Black has a .615 on goal percentage, with 13 total shots and eight on goal. She is Eastern’s top point earner, with four so far in her sophomore campaign.
Black also led Eastern as a freshman in 2011, with six goals for 12 total points on the year.
