EWU will face Fresno State for the first time in program history on Sunday, as the Bulldogs make the trek north from California to Sports & Recreation Field for an 11 a.m. start. Both teams head into the contest seeking not only their first victory of year, but their first offensive statistics as well. In four matches, Fresno has been shutout twice by two goals and twice by a once-score margin, the same of which can be said of EWU.
Star junior Cassie Black leads the Eagle charge into Sunday's game as EWU's career leader in goals per game (0.37), points per game (0.79), and game-winning goals (6), and it shouldn't be long before she continues her quest for No. 1 as Eastern's all-time goals leader. Black needs three more goals to tie with Britney Sparks and Whitney Brannan for first place at 17.
Defense has been the Eagles' calling card thus far in 2013, considering that none of their four matches has been lost by more than two goals. Junior Nathalie Schwerey is holding steady at a 1.50 goals against average for the year and has saved more than 78 percent of the shots coming her way. Schwerey set a season-high with eight saves last Sunday against Washington State and held the Cougars to a single goal. It was the first time an EWU team had held Washington State to one goal in five meetings.
