Cheney, Wash. – Matches against four programs who advanced to postseason play last year and a challenging Big Sky slate highlight the 2014 Eastern Washington women's soccer schedule as announced by head coach Chad Bodnar on Tuesday, May 20.
EWU will play 16 regular season matches in 2014, including 10 matches as part of its Big Sky slate in Bodnar's first season as head coach.
The Eagles open their campaign with a pair of exhibition matches against local foes Gonzaga and Washington State, traveling to Spokane on Thursday, Aug. 14, before welcoming the Cougars to Cheney on Saturday, Aug. 16.
Eastern kicks off its regular season schedule with a road trip to Southern California where it will face Fresno State on Friday, Aug. 22, and CSU Bakersfield on Sunday, Aug. 24. Fresno State is coming off a second-place finish in the Mountain West Conference and a berth in the MWC Tournament.
After nonconference tilts at Idaho on Friday, Aug. 29, and Seattle on Friday, Sept. 5, the Eagles will make the trek to Missoula, Montana, for a pair of neutral site matches against Hawai'i and Colorado State. Eastern will face UH on Friday, Sept. 19 before taking on Colorado State on Sunday, Sept. 21.
Idaho qualified for the Western Athletic Conference Tournament a season ago while Seattle claimed the WAC regular season and tournament titles to earn a spot in the NCAA Championship.
EWU opens its Big Sky schedule at home against Idaho State on Friday, Sept. 26, and defending BSC Tournament champion Weber State on Sunday, Sept. 28. Eastern then hits the road for four of its next five league matches, traveling to last season's regular season champion Portland State on Friday, Oct. 3, and Sacramento State on Sunday, Oct. 5, before hosting Idaho in a home match on Sunday, Oct. 12.
Following road matches at Southern Utah on Friday, Oct. 17, and Northern Arizona on Sunday, Oct. 19, the Eagles welcome Northern Colorado to Cheney on Friday, Oct. 24. Both NAU and UNC earned spots in last season's Big Sky Tournament.
Eastern plays its penultimate match at North Dakota on Sunday, Oct. 26, before wrapping up its regular season at home against Montana on Friday, Oct. 31.
The 2014 Big Sky Tourmanent will kick off on Thursday, Nov. 6, and will be hosted by the regular season champion. The tournament's championship match is set for Saturday, Nov. 8.
EWU welcomes back 12 letter winners from last year's squad, including an experienced group of seven juniors heading into their final year with the program. Bodnar added nine new faces to the team, including several impact players, back in February.
