Lauryn Koelzer and Alex Smyth have been selected by the Eastern Washington University athletics department as its Scholar-Athletes for the month of October.
Women’s soccer player Koelzer is majoring in business at EWU while concurrently moving herself up a number of Eastern Washington record listings. She is tied for the goal-scoring record with Cyeeta Mott’s total of six from last year.
Additionally, she ranks second in single-season points (12), is tied for third in career goals (9) and is tied for fourth in career points (20).
Koelzer, a native of Connell, Wash., is an honor student and is expected to be on the Big Sky All-Academic team this year.

Men’s cross country runner Smyth was named to the Big Sky Conference All-Academic team last year, an honor he is expected to earn this fall. He is an athletic training major and has been on the EWU Dean's List three out of five quarters thus far at Eastern.
In his first year last season, the native of Kent, Wash., placed 13th at the Big Sky Conference Cross Country Championships (25:08.20) and finished 71st at the NCAA West Regional Championships (32:01:70). Those 8,000-meter times were both the second-fastest times on the team at those meets, just behind standout senior Paul Limpf.

On Oct. 18 of this season, he finished as the runner-up behind Limpf at the EWU Invitational with a time of 25:00.4 over the 8,000-meter course.
Koelzer wraps up her Eagle soccer career at 3:30 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 31) with a home game against Montana. Smyth and the cross country teams compete at the Big Sky Championships on Saturday (Nov. 1) in Portland, Ore. The men’s race commences at 9:30 a.m., following the 8:30 a.m. women’s competition.
