Eagles Finish Off Bengals in First of Three Matches This Week
Freshmen Moira Hedberg and Chrissy Uriarte wins at singles and doubles
Starting off a week of three matches with a win is always a good thing.
And that's exactly what the Eastern Washington University women's tennis team accomplished on Wednesday (April 4) as it defeated the Idaho State Bengals 4-0 at the Spokane Racquet Club. Eastern's Big Sky Conference record sits at 2-2, and its overall record is now 4-11.
"We have two more matches this weekend and two next week, so we wanted to get this week off to a really good start," said women's head coach Mykala Hedberg. "The team did a good job competing and taking care of what they can control on the court."
The match kicked off at 11 a.m., with Moira Hedberg and Chrissy Uriarte snapping a two-match losing streak, by winning No. 1 doubles against Katharina Marsela and Laura Porras, 8-2.
Idaho State's Rilee Moorhead and Marian Tangarife defeated EWU's Nefeli Diamanti and Chelsea Patton in No. 2 doubles, 8-3. But Eagles Ryann Warner and Rocio Norena topped Zamira Vasquez and Rachel Ryan in the No. 3 match, giving Eastern the doubles point.
In singles play, Moira Hedberg pushed her record above .500 to 8-7, as she won at No. 1 over Marsela, 6-4, 6-1.
Uriarte (No. 3) and Warner (No. 4) both won their matches, sealing the match victory for the Eagles. They defeated Tangarife (6-1, 6-2) and Moorhead (7-6 (10-8), 6-2), respectively.
No. 2, 5 and 6 did not finish since the match was already decided and ISU had a plane to catch.
"Going into today, I told the girls that I wanted them to very positive of each other," said Mykala Hedberg. "They did a great job going out in doubles and grabbing the point right away. Then we finished it in singles. Overall, it was a great day."
