Women's Tennis Drops Pair Of Matches In Spokane

Spokane, Wash. – The Eastern Washington women's tennis team dropped a pair of matches this weekend, falling to Gonzaga and Idaho by identical scores of 6-1.

Eastern (1-3) opened play against the host Bulldogs on Friday, Jan. 31, before facing Idaho in Spokane on Saturday, Feb. 1.

"Our team fought hard this weekend," head coach Dustin Hinson said. "We know the things we need to continue working on, like gaining confidence, stepping up on big points and executing at crucial moments in the match. We have work to do but are moving in the right direction."

Junior Moira Hedberg was the lone Eagle to win her singles match against Gonzaga on Friday, besting the Bulldogs' top player, Samantha Polayes by the score of 6-0, 6-3.

Freshmen Dani Young and Katrina Domingo also battled against GU as Young took five games off Gonzaga's No. 2 player while Domingo claimed seven games.

Against Idaho on Saturday, freshman Erin Blessing picked up EWU's lone singles win in the third position, defeating the Vandals' Galina Bykova by a score of 6-1, 1-6, 10-5.

Moira Hedberg extended her match to a tiebreak before falling 6-2, 3-6, 10-7.

Eastern will play its first home match of 2014 next Friday, Feb. 7, when Lewis-Clark State travels to Cheney. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
