Eagle Women Fall in Season Opener, Men Battle No. 66 Utah

Jan. 16, 2009

The Eastern Washington University women’s tennis team opened its 2009 campaign with a 5-2 loss to Air Force in a match played in Pullman, Wash., on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 16).

Eastern (0-1) took immediate control of the contest by taking 2-of-3 doubles contests to earn the doubles point and go up 1-0. Amanda Mankovits and Kelsey Knight teamed up for an impressive 8-3 win at No. 2, while Rachel Berger and Judy Liening were victorious, 9-7, on court three.

In singles, Eastern went up 2-0 when Mankovits was the first one off the court following a convincing 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 2 over Allie Chermel. Unfortunately, the Eagles then came up just short of the Falcons (1-0) the rest of the way with two losses coming by 6-4, 6-4 scores and a third in three sets.

The Eagles (0-1) are right back in action with a road match versus Lewis-Clark State. First serve is set for 10 a.m. on Saturday (Jan. 17). The match is LCSC’s opening contest of 2009.

The Eastern Washington University men’s tennis team put up a tough fight on the road versus No. 66 Utah on Friday evening (Jan. 16), but were not able to overcome the Utes, falling 6-1.

The highlight of the day came courtesy of Art Karas, who pulled out a tight 6-4, 6-7 (8-10), (10-8) decision at No. 3 singles over Benito Jose Suriano. Nico Riego de Dios also played well on court two, falling 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) to Wes Hancock.

Even though the Utes (1-0) claimed each of their five singles wins in straight sets, the Eagle players were competitive in each of them, securing at least five games in each contest. The same was true in doubles, as three scores were 8-6, 8-5, 8-4, respectively.

The Eagles (1-2) are right back in action at 9 a.m. Pacific Time on Saturday (Jan. 17) versus Utah State. The Aggies fell at BYU in their season opener tonight, 7-0, and will host Eastern in their first home contest of 2009.
