Eastern Falls in Tight 4-3 Contest to Idaho

Feb. 24, 2007

The Eastern Washington University women's tennis team (1-5) dropped a 4-3 decision to the visiting University of Idaho Vandals (4-3) in an intercollegiate tennis match on Saturday morning. The Eagles were trailing, 3-1, and rallied to win two of the last three singles contests to finish and fell just short of the victory.

Idaho took control of the match right from the beginning by taking all three doubles matches to enter singles play with a 1-0 advantage. The Vandals then kept their momentum going by taking two of the first three singles matches to finish play to go up, 3-1.

Through that point in the match, the bright point for the Eagles was the play of Kasey Knox, who earned a 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 defeat of Idaho's top player, Patricia Ruman. The win ended a 1-5 stretch for the junior.

Kerstyn Dolack attempted a dramatic comeback at No. 3, which would have pulled Eastern to within one at 3-2, but fell just short. She dropped the contest to Efrat Leopold, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5). In the tiebreaker, Dolack rallied from 4-2 down to tie it, 4-4, before Leopold pulled away for her win.

The Eagles finished the contest on a couple of high notes to attain their second and third team points of the contest. Next to finish was Marie Demerath, who won convincingly at the No. 6 position over Carolyn Berry, 6-1, 6-1. The win ended a 1-5 stretch for Demerath, as well.

Completing the day's play was Amanda Mankovits, who snapped a personal seven-match winning streak for a comeback 2-6, 6-3, (10-3) victory against Kasie King. Mankovits had secured just two games in her last four sets before earning her impressive victory today.

The Eagles next play a week from today, taking on Wyoming (3-3) at 4 p.m. on March 3 in Pullman, Wash. The Cowgirl-Eagle match will be the middle one of three consecutive in Pullman for Wyoming. The Cowgirls will take on Idaho the night before meeting the Eagles and the host Washington State Cougars the day after.

Eastern's next home match will be at 3 p.m. on March 9 versus Montana. Eastern Washington will enter that match with a 1-1 Big Sky Conference mark and it will be Montana's first league contest of the season. The Grizzlies are 0-5 overall and will play Drake and Missouri before taking on the Eagles.
