Eagle Women Fall in Final Big Sky Home Match

Feb. 28, 2009

The Eastern Washington University women's tennis team wrapped up the first half of its Big Sky Conference season on Saturday morning (Feb. 28) with a 5-2 loss to Montana State. The contest also wrapped up a five-match homestand for the Eagles.

The Eagles (4-5, 2-2 BSC) did, however, show the strength of the team's depth with wins at the Nos. 5 and 6 positions. The victory in the fifth position was the third in four contests, while Eastern Washington has now claimed four straight No. 6 contests.

Caitlin Bampton prevailed on court five in dominating fashion, winning by 6-2, 6-3 scores. On the sixth court, Judy Liening outlasted her opponent in a tight first set and rallied impressively from a big loss in the second stanza for a 7-5, 1-6, (12-10) victory.

Also earning a win today was Eastern's No. 3 doubles team, Bampton and Kasie King, as the duo earned an 8-6 victory.

Unfortunately for Eastern Washington, the visiting Bobcats (5-6, 2-0 BSC) had already claimed the doubles point at that point. Then, Montana State won the first four singles matches to complete play to take an insurmountable 5-0 lead.

The Eagles will now play 10 straight matches away from home before returning for a pair of home contests on April 11 versus Portland and Seattle University. Up first will be Weber State at 11 a.m. Pacific Time on Friday (March 6). The Eagles will also play Idaho State the next day and Utah State in a non-conference tilt the day after.

The Eastern Washington University men's tennis fell at Portland (10-2) by a 7-0 score on Saturday morning (Feb. 28) before defeating Linfield in a neutral-site contest in Lincoln City, Ore., that evening, also 7-0.

Eastern Washington's first opponent of the day, Portland, has won 10-of-11 contests with its only two losses of the campaign coming on Sunday (Feb. 22) versus Big Sky Conference leader Sacramento State, 4-3, and No. 41 Washington, 7-0, in its season opener.

The best result for Eastern (6-5) in that match came courtesy of the No. 2 doubles squad of Julian Sanchez and Daniel Pez, who prevailed by an 8-5 score in their contest.

Then, the team took on undefeated Linfield squad and handed the Wildcats (6-1) their first loss of the season. Each of the EWU doubles teams won by at least an 8-3 score, while each of the singles matches were claimed by Eastern players in straight sets.

The Eagles (1-1 BSC) now head home for a three-match homestand, first taking on Montana State in a Big Sky contest at 10 a.m. on Saturday (March 7). The Bobcats are 6-3 heading into a Saturday match with Montana State-Billings. Montana State is 1-0 in Big Sky play.
