Eagles Toppled by Lumberjacks

March 9, 2008

The Eastern Washington University women's tennis team finally met its match in Northern Arizona, as the visiting Lumberjacks defeated EWU 6-1 in a Big Sky Conference match on Sunday morning (March 9), snapping Eastern's six-match winning streak, its longest winning streak in 15 years.

The Eagles remain with an impressive Big Sky record, 3-1, and are 6-6 overall after starting the season against top competition 0-5. EWU is off to its best league start ever and has already tied for its second-highest Big Sky win total in school history (the 1998 squad went 3-3 and the 2007 team was 4-3).

Northern Arizona (11-7, 4-1 BSC), a squad that nearly snapped perennial league power Sacramento State's 43-match winning streak in a 4-3 loss to the Hornets on Feb. 15, swept 5-of-6 singles matches today in two sets apiece. Marie Demerath had the top Eagle performance today, as she outlasted Kim Van Ginkel, 2-6, 7-5, (10-2) on court five.

The last time Eastern Washington had won six or more consecutive matches was in 1993, when that squad opened its campaign with eight straight wins.

The Eagles will now focus on bettering themselves, as the team will not play again until March 22. On that date, Eastern Washington will play its fifth Big Sky match of the year versus Weber State at Whitworth University in Spokane.
