The Eastern Washington University women's tennis team opened its 2008-09 season over the weekend at the Cougar Classic in Pullman, Wash.
The highlight of the weekend came on the doubles side, when Marie Demerath and Kelsey Knight advanced to the semifinals in the No. 1 doubles bracket. The duo defeated Jenna Tanzer and Anna Gullickson of Portland in the first round and Washington State's Bianca Selaru and Marina Nicolas in the quarterfinals, both by 8-5 scores.
The Eagle duo then finally met its match when Boise State's Bianca Jochimsen and Laura Baum outlasted the two by an 8-4 score.
Also winning first-round contests over the weekend were Judy Liening (No. 3 singles), Caitlin Bampton (No. 4 singles) and Amanda Mankovits and Bampton (No. 1 doubles).
Heather Handwerk and Anabel Sanchez also saw action in the tournament.
The team returns to action this weekend at the GU/EWU Classic, which will be played from Friday-Sunday (Sept. 26-28) in Cheney, Wash.
