Feb. 20, 2007

After four regular season meets, 41 members of the Eastern Washington University track and field teams travel to Bozeman, Mont., for the Big Sky Conference Indoor Championships Feb. 23-24, hosted by Montana State University at Brick Breeden Fieldhouse. Action begins each day at 8 a.m. Pacific time.

Last year, Eastern's men finished in fourth place with 78 points -- its highest finish and point total in 19 seasons as a member of the Big Sky Conference. The women were eighth with 22 points. Northern Arizona won both the men's and women's titles.

A total of 25 men will be competing, as EWU met Big Sky qualifying standards 21 times during the regular season. The women have 16 competing with six standards met. A total of five athletes return after earning All-Big Sky honors (top three finish) at previous indoor and outdoor championships.

Sarah Hegna from Arlington, Wash., will look to earn All-Big Sky Conference honors for the fourth-straight season in the pole vault. She was the 2005 champion as well as placing third as a freshman and second last year. She is currently ranked second in the BSC behind defending champion Elouise Rudy from Montana State. Hegna's best this season is a school record 13-4 1/2, which ranks third in Big Sky history. Rudy has vaulted 13- 9 1/4 to break her own BSC record of 13-5 3/4.

Teanna Meinhold, from Colville, Wash., who placed third in the triple jump at the 2005 BSC Outdoor Championships, is currently ranked fifth in the conference with a season best jump of 38-0. She is second on Eastern's all-time list at 38-7 1/2.

In the 20-pound weight throw, Carolee Gutierrez from Newport, Wash., broke into the Eastern record books to rank second with a throw of 58-1 3/4. That mark also ranks her third in the conference.

On the men's side, David Paul is ranked first in the BSC in the weight throw and third in the shot put. The senior from Yelm, Wash., broke the Eastern school record in the weight throw by almost four feet, with a throw of 67-1 1/2. His best shot put of the season is 55-7, which ranks him seventh all-time in school history. Paul finished second in both events at last year's Indoor Championships.

In the field events, junior Mike Uhlenkott from Spokane, Wash., is currently sixth in the conference in the pole vault. His vault of 15-9 ranks him second at Eastern all-time. Jeff Kaune (sophomore, Gig Harbor, Wash.), is fourth currently in the triple jump. His jump of 47-3 3/4 puts him eighth in school history. Also in line to earn All-Big Sky honors is senior Geoff Penrod from Nine Mile Falls, Wash. Penrod is currently fifth in the BSC in the long jump at 22-11 1/4.

Senior Curtis Suver (Covington, Wash.) and junior Paul Limpf (Vancouver, Wash.), look to earn conference honors in both the 3,000 and the 5,000. Suver and Limpf are ranked first and second, respectively, in the league in the 5,000. Suver's time of 14:34.30, is second all-time at Eastern, while Limpf is fourth at 14:41.59. Limpf is currently ranked fourth in the Big Sky in the 3,000 and Suver fifth. Limpf's time of 8:21.00 ranks him second all-time at EWU and Suver's mark of 8:24.93 places him fifth in school history.

In the sprints, senior Marcus Whitehead from Las Vegas, Nev., is first in the conference in the 400 with a time of 48.12. His time is the fourth best in school history. Whitehead is also a member of the men's 4 x 400 relay team that is ranked third (3:17.68).
