Eagles Head to Montana for the Al Manuel Invitational

March 31, 2009

After a productive early-season meet last week in California, the Eastern Washington University track and fields teams will compete this Friday and Saturday (April 3-4) at the Al Manuel Invitational in Missoula, Mont.

The Al Manuel Invitational will feature dual scoring between NCAA Division I schools, including Montana, Montana State and Eastern. Last year, the men’s team beat Montana State 77-75 and lost to Montana 124-77. The Eagle women lost to Montana 115-81 and Montana State 96.5-81.

At the Stanford Invitational on March 27-28, Paul Limpf broke a 31-year-old school record in the 10,000 meters and the trio of Amanda Peterson, Bonnie Berscheid and Nicole Luckenbach qualified for the NCAA West Regionals.

Limpf had a time of 29:45.89 to break the previous record of 29:48.6 set by Rick Adams in 1978. Limpf, who also qualified for the Big Sky Conference Championships with his mark at Stanford, had a previous personal-best time of 29:57.13 in 2008.

Another school record was set by Luckenbach, who qualified for the league championships and the NCAA West Regionals in the hammer with a throw of 182-10 to win that event at Stanford. That mark also broke the school record of 182-8 set by Julie Nielson in 2001.

Berscheid qualified for regionals and the BSC Championships in the discus with a mark of 155-9. The two-time defending champ in that event, she was two feet shy of her career-best mark of 157-11 set in 2008 that ranks her second in school history behind Carolee Gutierrez with a throw of 160-9 in 2007.

Peterson qualified for the conference championships and regionals in the javelin with a throw of 149-8.

Eastern athletes have already met the qualifying standards 16 times for the Big Sky Conference Championships, which take place May 13-16 in Missoula. The list includes nine for the men and seven for the women, with 13 of the marks earned last week at Stanford.
