Upcoming Meet Schedule
April 5-6 - 36th Annual Pelluer Invitational - Eastern Washington University - Cheney, Wash.

Eastern Washington University hosts the 36th Annual Pelluer Invitational Track and Field Meet April 5-6 at Woodward Field in Cheney, Wash. Upwards of 400 student-athletes from about 10 regional schools are expected to take part in the meet this week.

For the second straight year, the Pelluer Invitational will also include decathlon and heptathlon competitions that have previously taken place in mid-March. The men's decathlon begins Thursday (April 5) at 1 p.m., with the women's heptathlon starting at 1:30.

On Friday (April 6), the final day of the decathlon begins at 8:30 a.m. and the final three events of the heptathlon begin at 10 a.m. Field events in the regular portion of the Pelluer Invitational begin at noon and running events start at 4 p.m.

Last year, 414 athletes took part after meets the previous five years featured between 325 and 435 competitors. A record 476 took part in 2001 and 435 participated in 2005.

The meet is dedicated to Arnie Pelluer, a former track and cross country coach at Eastern in 1970-71, and also a coach at Whitworth College and Yakima Valley Community College. After starting the twilight meet in 1971, later that year he died in a swimming accident. The event was renamed in his honor the following year.

Top performers

David Paul (Sr., Yelm, Wash. - Yelm HS '02)
At the Al Manual Invitational (March 31), David Paul had the second-best hammer throw in Big Sky Conference history as he placed first and qualified for the NCAA West Regional Championships (May 25-26, Eugene, Ore.) in all three of his events. Paul broke his own school record of 204-5 in the hammer throw with a throw of 214-2. The all-time best in Big Sky history is 219-8 set by Karim Chester of Northern Arizona in 2005. Paul also threw 56-10 1/2 in the shot put that is the fourth best mark all-time in school history. His throw of 177-11 in the discus was two feet shy of his personal best 179-6, which is second all-time at Eastern, but more than eight feet further than the NCAA qualifying mark of 169-7.

Chad Butorac (So., Northport, Wash. - Northport HS '05)
The lone Big Sky Conference qualifier for the men in the running events at the Al Manual Invitational (March 31) was Chad Butorac. The sophomore took first in the 200 (21.82) and second in the 100 (10.88) to qualify in both events.

Carolee Gutierrez (Sr., Newport, Wash. - Newport HS '02)
At the Al Manual Invitational, Carolee Gutierrez qualified for the NCAA West Regional Championships (Eugene, Ore., May 25-26) in the javelin with a throw of 167-9, a new Big Sky Conference and school record. The throw broke her previous personal best of 156-6 set in 2005, and the old BSC and school record of 165-8 set by Eastern's Stephanie Ulmer last season. The NCAA qualifying mark is 142-6 1/2. Gutierrez also qualified for the Big Sky Conference Championships (Pocatello, Idaho, May 10-12) in the shot put, discus and hammer throw. She won the discus with a throw of 142-9, was third in the shot put at 42-5 1/2 and placed fourth in the hammer at 170-4, just one foot shy of her personal best of 171.

Mattie Bridgmon (Jr., Laramie, Wyo. - Laramie HS '05)
The lone distance runner to qualify was Mattie Bridgmon in the 5000 with a time of 17:59.0, at the Al Manual Invitational (March 31) to place fifth all-time in school history.

Sarah Hegna (Sr., Arlington, Wash. - Arlington HS '03)
In the first outdoor meet of the season at the Dusty Lane Invitational on March 17, Hegna qualified for the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Championships in the pole vault with a vault of 11-9 3/4. The qualifying mark is 11-3. Hegna holds the school record of 13-4 1/2 set last year when she was runner-up in the Big Sky both indoors and outdoors.

Krystal Deyo (Fr., Castle Rock, Wash. - Castle Rock HS '06)
Krystal Deyo finished first in her first outdoor meet as an Eagle in the 100 with a time of 12.62 in the finals and 12.68 in the preliminaries at the Dusty Lane Invitational on March 17. Deyo also finished third in the 200 with a time of 26.70.

Cody Irby (So., Otis Orchards, Wash. - East Valley HS '05)
In the hammer throw, Irby threw a personal best 190-8 for fourth place at the Dusty Lane Invitational on March 17. His mark ranks him eighth all-time at Eastern. He also finished ninth in the javelin throw at 146-7. In the javelin, Irby has a career best 199-1 which places him 14th all-time in school history.
